Mrozowa Wola near Stoczek – June 16, 2011

The Lasting Memory Foundation initiated the commemoration of the burial site of 9 Jews murdered by the Nazis in Mrozowa Wola on 26 November 1942. The only survivor of the execution, Chasia Farbiarz, came from Israel together with her sons to attend the unveiling ceremony. The local residents and guests paid homage to the victims.

The mayor of Stoczek, Mieczysław Wójcik, and the president of the Lasting Memory Foundation Zbigniew Niziński hosted the meeting. The ceremony was also attended by: Charge d’Affaires of Israeli Embassy to Poland Nadav Eshcar, the Chief Rabbi of Poland Michael Schudrich, representative of Chancellery of the President of Poland Maria Ossolińska, Tadeusz Karczmarczyk and Maliński family – the Righteous among the Nations, local authorities and clergy, pupils of the local schools and residents. The first part of the ceremony took place on the execution site next to the road in the center of Mrozowa Wola. That was the place where the Nazis shot to death 9 Jews, including 4 children. They had been captured while hiding in the vicinity after the deportation of Jews from Stoczek to Treblinka. At the time Chasia Farbiarz, born in Stoczek, was 10 years old. Together with her mother Rywka, cousins from Warsaw and 6 other Jews from Stoczek, she was put by a ditch in order to be shot. By a miracle, she was not hit by bullets and nobody noticed she was alive. In a speech delivered over the place during the ceremony, she said: “I was the only one who survived of the whole group of Jews sitting in this place. My destiny was to stay alive and tell the world what happened here, so the next generations could remember about those dreadful events. We are obliged to make the world remember this crime”. Afterwards, we witnessed a deeply touching moment: Chasia was approached and hugged by a woman who gave her bread in the very first moments after the execution. After unveiling the memorial, the guests walked to the nearby forest where the victims had been buried. The second part of the ceremony took place in front of the memorial stone placed over the mass grave. After the Rabbi and the priests had said prayers, the guests laid flowers on the grave.
