Feliksin near Krzywda – June 20, 2011

In Autumn 1943 the Nazis murdered 9 Jews hiding in a forest dug out in Feliksin. The commemoration of the burial site was initiated by the Lasting Memory Foundation which hosted the ceremony of unveiling the memorial over the grave of victims on 20 June 2011.

The ceremony participants gathered in a forest, on the burial site of 9 Jews, including women, who attempted to save their lives hiding in a dug out but got killed inside it.
The ceremony was attended by:
Alon Simhayoff- cultural attache of the Israeli Embassy in Warsaw, Michael Schudrich- the Chief Rabbi of Poland, Bożena Opioła – representative of Chancellery of the President of Poland, Sonia and Abram Hurman- survivors of the Holocaust, Ester Kobialkiewicz- guest from Israel, mayor of Krzywda Jerzy Kędra, local authorities and priests, school youth and local residents. The ceremony was held by Zbigniew Niziński, the president of the Lasting Memory Foundation. He outlined the story of the place: the Jews were supplied with food by the resident of Stoczek, Stefania Ponikowska. The Nazis picked up her trail and forced her to reveal the hiding place of Jews. In the forest, they threw grenades into the dug out and killed the Jews. Stefania Ponikowska was also killed. In their speeches, representative of the Israeli Embassy and representative of the Chancellery of the President of Poland referred to the memory of life and Extermination of Jews, as well as the attempts to rescue them during the Holocaust. Abram Hurman recalled his life during the war, which was preserved thanks to the help of Poles. He mentioned 14 Polish families killed during the war for their assistance to Jews and partizans. Thanks to that, about 70 Jews survived in the vicinity, including 17 people from Okrzeja, some even from Warsaw and Łowicz. Afterwards, the Rabbi Michael Schudrich and the local priests said prayers and shared their thoughts with the guests. Another touching moment was to hear occasional verses declaimed by the pupils of the School Complex in Huta Dąbrowa, as well as their songs accompanied by birds and carried deep into the forest.
